February 28, 201412 yr In this Part, we will look at each of the Chess pieces that were made according to the Design parameters we talked about in Part 2. Each Chess piece's design features will be discussed and then images of them will show what was described for each one. Let's start with the PAWN. The Pawn is one of the smallest pice in the set. It's also pretty plain and has the traditional round "ball" on top. The body of the Pawn has a raised round base, (as all of them do,) and one "S" curve. ROOK The Rook is also small, but has the traditional "Castle Top" on it. It aslo has a double "S" undulating curve. In Part 4, we will cover the cutting of the slots in the top. KNIGHT This piece is the prettiest, but also the hardest to make. In Part 4 we will cover the making of the "horse head" in detail. BISHOP The Bishop is a little taller and has a 1/8" larger diameter base. The head is elongated and has the traditional "cross slot" in it's head. Part 4 will talk about how the slot is cut consistently. QUEEN AND KING The largest pieces in the set. The top designs do vary from tradition a little as I wanted something a little different. Both the Queen and King both have gold Spires and Crosses on them. February 28, 201412 yr Author And, here's the King. When I went to add the image of the KIng, Part 3 "auto posted." Maybe the post was too long and large. Happened to me in Part 2, so I will be shortening the up-coming Parts. Larry Â

March 9, 201412 yr Still wonderful, I have a question, that slot in the bishop has always perplexed me, even as a kid, what is the tradition behind the slot? Thanks for the effort here Larry, by the way, great photography too! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
March 9, 201412 yr Author I don't know. I think it might have something to do with a Castle that had that spire design. "Fortress" like.Just tried to stay somewhat with tradition.Others?Larry
