March 8, 201412 yr Well now that I have a name to this Amish made plane, time to start a refurb. Got things apart, slooooowlyyy.   Found out about the wedges for the fence.  They are tapered backwards, that way they don't fall out and get lostOk, so i might have to make a couple new ones.  Got the fence out the body, got to looking at the sole. Heay wear and tear up front, and out of square, too.   Went over to the Tool Chest, dug out the #78 and rested it against the skate.   a few strokes along the sole got things back in oder.  At least i don't have to remove all that thick varnish the vender put all over this plane. yep, there is now a cutter in there.  Will need to make a "V" groove on the backside of it, but I did find a use for an old Harbour Freight 1/4" chisel.   Ground on the handle area until the handle fell off.  Ground away all else until there was a straight shaft along the entire length. Had a big cup of water handy, too. used a pair of Visegrip Finger clamps to hold the chisel, instead of my burnable fingers. Next up.  That skate, seems to be a lot of rust under that varnish.   IF I can get these screws looseYep that IS a screw on the end, will have to clean out the slot.  Tried the sander to strip away the varnish, just clogged the belt up.This might take awhile, at least until I can make a 1/4' wide groove, anyway.  Stay tuned Planer? March 8, 201412 yr Author From what I've learned today;Gus. Roseboom was an Amish plane maker from PA.   From the early 1900s to the depression era. This one seems to be stamped as from Cinc. O.  Apparently the vender/dealer, not the store owner, applied a very thick coat (s) of varnish to everything on this plane.  Plane is just over a foot long.   Seems to be in ok shape.    Just a lot of wear on it.  The wedges for the fence have mushroom ends.    Might just make all new wedges.  Where the fence screws into the rods, the wood is cracked.  Will have to remove those screws, add some glue and a clamp, and then new screws.   As for the skate.....we'll see.  Need to get it off the plane and then clean it up.   May need a new skate.  Happen to have some steel flat stock, just sitting around.  might be the right size, too..   May have to add a new name on the nose......BANDIT   sounds good?Planer? March 10, 201412 yr Author Got an iron made for this thingDid a lot of water-cooled gringing on an old H-F 1/4" chisel.   What didn't look like an iron for a plow plane was removed. That wedge has more angles than a con man.  Started to clean the metal plate called a skate, widen the slots on the screws abit, too.  Tried a screwdriver...NADA, not even a hint of a budge.  Ok, will leave these alone.Changed from cutting disc to sander drum, and worked on the skate a bit.  Also work was started on the fence.   Got the rods free of the fence itself, and found a found itemsNo points? Never had them, either. What year did points begin on screws?   The brackets these go into were split, tooBadly....Whether to re-glue these back up, or just make some new ones???  This is getting to be interesting....stay tuned Planer? March 12, 201412 yr Author Ok, heeeerrree we goooo.... Had some QSWO from an old barn rafter, it was almost the right thickness.  Sabresaw to cut out a wedge.  Then a beltsander,AND a 5-1/4 junior jack plane to finish it into a wedge shaped object.  That actually fits!   Had some Black Walnut scraps sitting around, had to sort through them, to find a clear, straight grained chunk.   Was a bit too thick, but "Ve haft vays.."  of doing things here.  Sabresaw to get the rough shape.   Then a beltsander to even things out.  Tried the Junior jack to get close to the right thickness.....eh, maybe.. Fitted a 3/8" round over bit into the router.   Left the router standing on it's top.  One hand to hold the router, one hand to hold the part.  Not recommended for newbies.   Then, back to the beltsander, to wear out the belt some more.  Then drill a pilot hole for that screw.   A LOT of trial fits later....(not sure WHY things are yellow) we have a replacement rod!  Screw even fits!  Cleaned up the two small wedges, that hold both rods in placeHmm, maybe a better shotok, so not so better.  Next up ( besides a tripod) will be a "V" groove on the backside of the iron.   Matches a v shaped end on the skate, to lock in in the center.   Then, maybe a finish.    After that.....Maybe use this old plow plane... March 14, 201412 yr Author other than a re-finishing, here tisHave to strip off the nasty varnish a seller slopped on, but as long as most of the parts are fixed, might as well put it back together, and give it a trySeemed to start the cut okAnd a few curlies flying out the sideYep, lots of curlies flying aroundeven made a nice groove.  And quieter than my electric router.  Kind of a Schweeeeesh.   Planer?
