March 21, 201412 yr  A box came in the mail today, all the way from Florida.  Hidden under a MOUNTAIN of shredded paperSupposed to be gray body, red chipbreaker and frog.  This is a Victor #1104, made by Stanley.  Looks like it needs a bit of rehab.  So, first things first.   Tear it all apart. And get rid of a few spider nests that came along for the ride ( got enough of them, already)  Placed all the small items in a plastic tub/bowl.Pretty, ain't they?   I tend to use a bowl for these small items, otherwise, they WILL wander off, and not return.  Had some shopping to do, so things had to wait a bit ( GRRRR!) But, sandpaper bought, wrong size sanding belt bought (seems to happen to me alot) can of RED Rustoleum bought, and a tire for the van. The Other half was along, so things took awhile.   Got back home, and hauled all the goodies, and parts to the Dungeon Rehab Center.....er, shop.   Down there, we have numerous machines to torture any who show up.  Like a beltsanderKnown to make the nastiest rust ( and wayward fingernail) quake in fear . A used 100 grit belt.  It works at removing rust from flat areas, flattening backs of irons, soles and sides. Even gets a frog to shape up. Face was sanded smooth and flat, and the frog's seat area was sanded as well.  Worked over the base casting, and got a start on the iron.  The chipbreaker's edge was also sanded flatter, then the chipbreaker was given a coat of RED. There is another torture device in the shop, one that can make bolts, and other small items vanish into thin air ( or thick shavings under the bench)A H-F 5 speed drill press!!!  Armed with a bevy of wire wheels and brushes.   Unless one has a death grip on a bolt, this machine will send it into the great unknown, at light speed!   Visegrips are strongly encouraged.   Got all the bolts, threads and all cleaned of rustiness. Set them aside, in that bowl. Worked over the lever cap, first with the wire wheels, and wire cups. Then placed it on a purple 3M pad, and scrubbed it clean.Still need to mask it for a red paint job around the letters. Ok, back to the base casting. Wire wheels, both on the dp and on a dremel unit.   Got the inside about cleaned out.   The sides and the sole were next.  Had some 100 grit sheets, and a few ( ok, ok, a LOT) of swipes over the sheet, to get the brown stuff off.  Sheet fills up with rust, stop shake it off.  While that is going on, a few trips along the purple Pad to clean things off the casting. The sides, and thesole.  Getting worn out, so, time to close shop for today.   Been up and about since yesterday MORNING, and a 12 hour workday too.  So, had everthing sitting on the benchtop, ready for tomorrow's work on itHaven't decided on the handles, just yet. They aren't all that bad, not perfect, but not too bad. Maybe later tomorrow, I can get a shaving out of this old plane. (that green bottle is the reason for the fuzzy views, but it kept me awake...) Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
March 21, 201412 yr That is going to look pretty nice Steve when you get it all wrapped up. Steve, what kind of camera do you have? Model number too. I think I know what is going on with your consistently out of focus images. I'll look through the manual and help ya out. So, how many planes you up to now? 126! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
March 21, 201412 yr Wow Steve that is a very nice find. I got to look through more boxes. I like your arsenal of torture tools. I sounds like you now have this down to a science. I could almost feel the tone of the mad scientist in your words as I read through the step of the victim. Looking froward to seeing the completed restorations and those paper thin shavings you are so good at getting them to give up. March 21, 201412 yr Author A red, Polaroid iS426 is the usual one. There is an auto focus trying to work, but the right hand just shakes way too much when I pull the trigger. I have aVivatar ViviCam F128, but even on macro setting, it takes way to big of pictures....like 3MB ones...Have a Rust Hunt to go to today. Later on, that plane is scheduled for even more work.........Igor, to the Lah-Bor-a-Tory!Planer?
