March 21, 201412 yr  Got the base all spiffi-fied up, sole flat, sides looking decent. When i say flat, I don't mean Machined flat. The main areas that HAVE to match each other are the mouth area, and the two ends.   It is ok to have some areas a little concave, less friction, I guess. This is about as good as this plane can get.  So, the outside of the base is done, the inside was cleaned up.  Just a wipe out to getrid of all the grime in there.  The threads have a few drops of 3in1 oil on them. The bolts and the adjuster wheel are run up and down the threads, to spread the oil out.  A brush like thingy on the end of the Dremel, to clean out all them corner areas.   Then, since the frog is also ready to goMight as well install the thing. The lateral lever was all rusty, got a wire wheel, and a small sanding drum after it, then a wipe down with the oil.  Note: I tend to set the frog in-line with the ramp area on the base. I want a nice smooth tranistion between the ramp and the frog.   That way, the iron is supported all the way through. Speaking of irons....Spent a good part of the afternoon working on it's edge Had a honig guide to run the bevel on the big beltsander, to get things close. Then a little bit on the small oneWith the table 90 degrees to the platten, sanded a nice bevel, and polished the back a bit.   Had some painting to do, soa re-fresh for the chipbreaker, and an infil o the lever cap, more about that one in a bit ( better photo, too)  While the rustoleum fumes were wifting across the shop, got out the "Sharpening Center"  torture rack. a 12 x12 floor tile, as flat as I could find.  Couple of wet-or-dry sand papers glued down, and a two grit oil stone.   Worked my way through all of the above.  Plenty of oil, too. Free handed this time.  Why? Needed to work on my techs, I guess.  Getting close, nowtried to tone down the glare, but the back IS mirror BRIGHT.    So, base is completed, iron is SHARP. What is holding things up?  That D##@#M Rustoleum is still tacky to the touch.  Did clean up the lever cap, thoughAnd a better look at the edge's bevelThe bolt that goes between these two, USED to be a Dark, rusty BROWN.   Looking better now.. Well, as soon as the paint is cured out, I'll put this old boy to work.....Pine to start, then some walnut? Or, just skip the Pine.... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
March 21, 201412 yr Author Well, well, the paint has dried.  Time to try this old guy out?A trip along pine Avenue? And walnut street. just a few hours of work.... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
March 22, 201412 yr Author Brought the plane upstairs, and had the granddaughter do a couple shotsFrom the side, anda head-on shot. That shaving is about 24" long, from a pine 2x4.  I can even see through it... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
March 25, 201412 yr Author HMMMM, seems to be a small problem with the plane.   I can only get a shaving from the middle third of the iron.  Will have to take it back.....to the Dungeon Shop, for a little more.....Vork......Will try to flatten the sole a bit more, seems one side is a bit on the high side.    Sandpaper belt, and/or a LARGE file.  This time, with everything clamped in place, with the edge drawn back in, out of the way.  Wouldn't do to have it involved in this, just wouldn't do.    Otherwise, not too bad a plane.  Better than a Handyman 1204, at least...Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
