March 27, 201412 yr Actually "found" my lathe this week! As mentioned before, my time has been occupied with the bunk beds for the little kids next door. It has been slow going- partially because each stage requires materials to be moved to get to another machine and also with preparation for yet another family visit. Anyway, the original design, for the bunk beds had the safety "fences" constructed of square uprights There's another "fence" at the head of the bed, too. Well, Mimi said she thought the uprights were a little plain. Maybe I could change them. The only two pieces of equipment that hadn't come into play so far was the oscillating spindle sander and the lathe. I have an idea!!! Some oak pieces 5/8" thick and 1" wide and then the round ends turned on the lathe! 3/8" hole into some mounting rails. Everything here is just clamped together, sot of a combination of dry fit and visual check. Head of the bed. Mimi said this is much better and I agree. Turning the rectangular piece to round was fairly straight forward. I started at the "round" end and worked back. Very light cuts at the square are needed to prevent splintering and tear out. To get the round end the correct diameter- with no measuring- I used a 3/8" open end wrench and a parting tool to bring the "spindle end" to diameter. Safe Turning!
