April 1, 201412 yr Ok we are off and running with that black cherry bowl, here's how it looks now. This is how it's looked since I stopped working on it last year. Some of you may remember it. It's about 7 1/4" across at the lip, and inside is right at 7" I was having an issue of tear out, possibly due to a dull blade but I thought it was sharp. I was going to just leave it as is and just finish the bottom, but to me, that would still be unfinished. Lew recently posted something about tear out on his Wisdom for Woodturners post so I think I will go look at that before proceeding. Ok it wasn't a Wisdom for woodturners post, it was a separate post about tear out while turning Oh the depth is about 2.75". April 1, 201412 yr Love it Charles, love that lil lip you ripped into the rim of it! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
April 1, 201412 yr Author Thanks John, with any luck I will be able to keep that lip. It's been moved from place to place after coming off the lathe last summer so it has a few dings in the rim but nothing I can't fix. My major concern is that tearout which seems to be coming out with some 80 grit sand paper. If I can't get it out where i am satisfied, I will of course remove the rim down to where the tearout is gone. We'll see what happens. April 1, 201412 yr Nice bowl Charles, I hope you can save the lip. It has a nice shape to it. April 2, 201412 yr Author Thanks John, I hope so too. I am at this point trying to sand the bowl with 80 grit on the slowest speed the lathe will go which is about 550rpm. this so far seems to be working out a lot of the tears, but I may not be able to get them all out. If not, maybe I can fill them. We'll see. Trying to work around the lip, so far it seems to be working. The damage doesn't seem to be as deep now as it once was so maybe I can get away with just sanding it out, hope so.
