April 5, 201412 yr  Has gotten off to a decent start.   Since I was over in the next county, for a heart check up, decided to "motor" up to the ex-Lumber Yard Antique Store.   Looked around in the showroom a bit Union No. 5 jack plane....$30? A curved sole Coffin smoother @ $18?? Six wood bodied jack planes, average price was $25?? A Rusty, Type 16 Stanley #4 ( used as a doorstop?) @ $29??? Hmmm, well, there IS the barn outside the showroom.  Anything that comes into the store stops at the barn first.  There is an aisleway, with a lot of shelves on both sides.  FULL OF RUSTY TOOLS. Got to snooping around in the four stacks of handsaws.....ten Meat Saws? Nah....three pruning saws? Nope.  Five or six short, flimsy saws...ah, no.   15 Normal handsaws?  Eh, could be.. Did find a decent enough looking saw, no rust on it, intact tote, straight sawplate, no missing teeth. Ok, we'll get that one. Next, in fact I just did an "About...FACE" and saw a bunch of chisels on a shelf. Hmmm, do I NEED any Cold Chisels?  Nope.   Plastic handled wood chisels?  Nah.  Ah, a decent looking, if rusty, 1/2" wide paring chisel.   Took my two "treasures" to the check out counter. After waiting for another customer to get her stuff checked out, MY TURN!  "Did they give you a price back there?" "No, and all I have in my pocket is six bucks, and some change.." "Sounds about right, sold" $6.00 plus the sales tax.   Got the item homeYep, the cisel is a might rusty, that's why it is a rust hunt. Edge was pitted, but I tend to grin a new edge anyway.  Not any name on it.  Now, about the saw behind it.  It is a Disston D-7 Lightweight Pattern, 8 point crosscut saw.  Listed in the Disston Catalog back in 1953 to 1955. The three saw nuts are brass, the Medallion is steel.  There is a readable etch, too.  After I scrub it up a bit, I can get some Gun Blue and make it pop back up.  There is a lot of "set" to them teeth, too.  There looks like some black paint on the wood partSince this saw had an "All weather" handle, maybe it was painted?   Well maybe a bit of clean up, maybe a bit of work on the tote?   This $5 saw just might be usable??? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
