Patriot Picking - Stanley No. 100 1/2 Mini Hand Plane

Featured Replies

I had a fellow tell me a week ago he had this hand plane with a curved bottom and he wanted to know if I was interested. Well my ears perked up like Spock and I wanted to hear about this little plane. He knew nothing about it but told me he would bring it to the auction Saturday night and let me have a look.

I thought he had a No. 113 Circular Plane.

ning-no113-3534-67.jpgI have only seen one of these while out looking and I didn't buy it and not I am kicking myself. So I was thinking this might be what he had.

However when I saw it I was just as excited. It was a Stanley No. 100 1/2 Squirrel Tail plane.

No.10012.jpgIt was not too bad, but did have a little surface rust and some of the japanning was missing but not a lot.

No.100andahalf1.jpg

The bottom is Convex so that was what he was referring to as curved.

No.100andahalf3.jpgAs you can see the bottom and sides are not too bad, just some surface rust.

It is clearly marked on the top of the rear handle which is what gives it the name Squirrel Tail.

No.100andahalf2.jpgThe Stanley No.100 1/2 was made from 1936 till 1962. The lever cap began being painted red in 1941 but before that it was japanned. The No.100, 101 and this plane all have a depression for your index finger on the front. And it is hard to believe, but the hole in the handle was standard so it could by hung on a nail.

So to just say, I was excited to get my hands on it was an understatement. Now you might find a lot of these and yes there are some on eBay, but I like to put my hands on it when I can and to have this one come to me was cool.

So I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning and then cleaned off the surface rust.

No.100andahalf4.jpgSo here it is with just a little clean up. I have a bit more to do but that was all the time I had.

No.100andahalf5.jpgNo.100andahalf6.jpgNo.100andahalf7.jpgSo this one will go nicely with the No.H101P.

ning-miniplanes-3534-57.jpgThese will go along with the Stanley the later model of the Stanley No.101 on the left.

ning-miniplanes2-3534-76.jpgThey are all three sharp and now sitting in the display case.

So it was a nice day picking and something special to add to my ever growing collection.

That's a real find, John. As is the 101 and the H101P.

Cute little trio.

Great find John!! And you did a great job on the clean up too. Those are great looking planes and stylish, almost looks like a mini scrub the way that mouth is curved?
