lew Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 Folks, I was asked if anyone has an idea approximately how many pens could be finished with a 2 oz. container of thin CA. I don't use this method for finishing- only stabilizing soft wood. Certainly it would depend on the type of wood, size of the pan and I guess the depth of finish. Also, any sources of CA would be appreciated. Thanks, Lew Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins!
John Hechel Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 I tried CA a few times but didn't care for the fumes. its hard to tell how many pens I'd get because we use it for all sorts of tasks including sealing split fingers.Round Barn WoodCrafts, Plymouth WIroundbarnwoodcrafts@hotmail.com
John Moody Posted April 9, 2014 Report Posted April 9, 2014 When I finish with the BLO/CA method, I use a few drops of BLO, rub it on the pen, then about four drops of CA and rub in on the pen putting pressure on the paper towel until you get the heat, which causes the fumes. I usually do that about six times on the each pen. so 24 drops per pen. I have never measured how many drops are in a bottle, but it last a pretty good while. Two keys is I sand to the micro grits and then I buff them on the three wheel Beall Buffing system. That may have been way more than you ask Lew.
