Disposable Paner Blades

Featured Replies

Many of us who haven't yet sprung for a carbide spiral cutter head so we have to deal with the stack of disposable planer blades that are building up on our benches.  Here's my question to you, "What do you folks do with these semi sharp weapons of mass destruction?"  I must have 10  or 12 sets of these just laying around.  Maybe I need to have my wife post on Pinterest for ideas.

Ron, you could build some shaves and use them for the blade perhaps?

After I typed that first sentence, I googled planer knives and saw how they are configured, it may be hard to convert them to a shave blade after all, they have all those holes in them and what not.

You make scrapers out of them. Make a wooden handle and cut the blade to say 4" wide for general scraping, and you could cut them up in custom sizes for scraping moldings etc.

Marking knives! Perfect for left and right ones. You could be fancy and put handles on them but duct tape works.

Why not make a pair (L&R) fancy handled marking knives and submit them to some wood mags. Might win a drill or something.

I may just have to start saving mine.  I usually put them in a special metal container and recycle them.  Great ideas, guys

Ever hear of "Scratch Stock"      Make a wooden holder, with a slot to hold  a cutter made from those planer blades.    Grind the profiles you want/need ( there is a difference?) clamp the cutter up, and make a bead or other detail items.

About like a poor man's Stanley #45....

Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
