April 14, 201412 yr  making a few rebates, and testing a plane or twoWhat kind of plane makes strings out one side, and curlie things out the other?Sitting there in the background.  A Wards #78 byStanley. Rebates both with the grain and across the grain.   Just set the fence, and the depth stop, and go to town.   But, what makes those stringy things?Had to move the depth stop up a bit. That little cross-like gizmo is called either a spur, or a knicker.   Cuts the grain ahead of the iron.  As for trying out a few planes?I guess I can keep this one around.   Another stanley made Wards, this one in the #3 size.   The other two plane like objects tested will be up on the Fee-bay, later today.   A Stanley Defiance #4, the one that was made with a normal frog.  Looks like a #110 with an adjuster wheel under the iron.  Real lightweight plane, but the iron moves too much. A Millers Falls made Dunlap.  Pitting on the base wasn't the factor on this #3 sized plane.   just would not take a fine enough shaving. Side is stamped as a 3D BB.   Still testing to be done, have to thin the herd a bit.   Need the cash to buy some others, I guess... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
April 14, 201412 yr Author Ok, the three getting the boot so far:Stanley Defiance #4:   iron tends to wiggle a bit, plane is almost too light in weightMillers Falls/ Dunlap #3 D BB.   When one has the Millers falls #8?  The 3D BB was a lower lower plane, just bare bones.Stanley Victor #1104.  When one has a Millers Falls #9?  Took way to long to refurb.   Time for someone else to plat with it.Not on the list ( and ain't gonna be) Stanley 4 Square Junior JackDunlap with a york pitch frog and that West german iron ( at least for now)The Wood River #4 V3 stays putI think that is about all the smoothers taken in to account( never know, might be one hiding down there, somewhere)Might be a block plane and a jack that will go, though....Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
