April 23, 201412 yr Listen to Paul, listen and watch, this is simply awesome:http://youtu.be/10RPOPBTwZA
April 23, 201412 yr yep, I do like my older jack planes.  I happen to have four of the #5 jack planes, plus a 5-1/4 sized jack.   Two have cambered edges. The one Stanley #5 will take those same see-through shavings everytime, as will the Junior Jack. Now, IF paul would show how he goes from rough sawn to flat and smooth using a jack plane????(Maybe I should try to make a video of how I do that, some day?)Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
April 23, 201412 yr Author I'd bet he does it like some old hard heads like me, and Roy hates it, cross grain with a hacked smoothing plane.Agree about the old Stanley's, I've got 3 of Lord Stanley's myself and they work fine, the oldest one does have a much thicker blade.
April 23, 201412 yr  A FrankenBailey #5, a Sargent Type 4,#414c, A Great Neck Corsair #C-5 ( The Scrub Jack) and an Ohio Tool Co. of Auburn NY. 05c are my jack planes.  At one time, I did have a Union #5A super Jack.   Could not get it to work right, and sold it.   It was just too big for normal jack plane work.  There is also a Stanley 4Square Junior Jack in the shop.   Iron is stamped with the SW.  About the same as a Stanley 5-1/4.   LOVE this little guy!   Same iron as a #3, but the base is 11" long.   And, some of the best handles known to man.  VERY comfy to use.....all day long. There is a Try Plane as well.   A while back, won a Diamond Edge #6c.  It came in the mail....in a couple of RUSTY pieces.  Refund paid for a new base, and i had to make the new handles.   All else was cleaned up, and reused.  Pheonix like, it arose from the "Crash & Burn" into a very good try plane.   The Rebuilt DE6c will give up see-through ribbons on about ny wood in the shop. The iron was the wrong size for the plane, so a trade was worked out, and now the iron has a Shark on it.   yep, a Berg iron. IF you can find one, BUY IT NOW.    Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
April 23, 201412 yr Very good video. He certainly has them all tuned up well. Steve I think you should go ahead and make that video. I can't think of anyone doing any more of that kind of work than you.
