April 30, 201412 yr I have a GP craftsman air ratchet. It's an older model Model# 756188030 Looks like this apart Above you see the three main components: The Wrench Head, the Motor cartridge and the Receiver. This is the inside of the reciever Here is the motor cartridge It turns freely. In fact I've used an air gun to make it turn. The wrench head and it's planetary gears So here is the problem: When I put it together all that happens is the air comes out the vent and nothing turns. Any ideas?
April 30, 201412 yr I've worn out my share of these when I was an auto mechanic years ago.The housing or the fins may be worn out and too much clearance letting the air find the easiest way out.Unless you use it every day you can get a new one from H/F for not much $$$. If it's used all the time I'd get a good one.Just my 2 cents worth.Harry BrinkBulldog WoodworkingMontana
April 30, 201412 yr You probably tried this, but if the motor cartridge is installed in the receiver and you apply air, can you stall the motor by holding the gear? Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins!
May 1, 201412 yr Author The housing or the fins may be worn out and too much clearance letting the air find the easiest way out.Well that might make sense, but a few years ago I took it apart to clean it - it was working perfectly. Then when I reassembled it, it didn't.  It's been in my tool box all this time.I went to the sears site and got the PDF of the exploded parts list. Unfortunately the motor cartridge is exploded in that view too, so I can't tell from the PDF if there's a part missing.  I never took the motor apart. Just pulled it from the housing to wipe it down and oil things. There's no way to lock the motor cartridge in a position rotationally in the housing there's no key to make it sit in any particular clocked position so I'm guessing it floats freely. The seal around the diameter is pretty darn good.Should there be an o ring? When I insert the motor and press the spline gear against a hard surface to prevent it popping out and apply air ( without the wrench head screwed on) The cartridge effects a pretty tight seal.  I wonder if there's a little part missing ( like a little steel ball) that sits on the end of the spline gear that prevents the thing from sliding forward and that's what happens - - it slides forward when assembled and that lets the air out the vent ? I dont see anything like that in thishttp://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/partsdirect/printSubCom...
