ok i have been using my Freud router, and at first it was awsome to use,but now when i turn it on it dosent want to turn or i have to turn it by hand(finger)to get it started an then it is slow to start, then all the sudden it takes off like a scalded dog,an tryin to use the virable speed knob dosent work,so do i need to get a new one or is there some way to fix this one,any feed back is welcome

take Life slowly,no reason to speed,it will be there when u get there, slow down an smell the trees an fresh cut wood

When you get it running, does the variable speed control have any effect at all? If not, it sounds like that might be the problem.

Try blowing it out with compressed air. If it has a lot of dust and stuff that can interfere with it. Can you turn the motor by hand easily? If you have access to the brushes look at them see if they are worn out and making good contact with the armature. If that don't help then I would have to go with what Lew said.

Sounds like you have a dead spot in the commutator.  I'm with Wayne, try blowing it out.

virable speed durn't woik and yous gots to start it with a pull cord?  That's pretty bad.

How old is this router?   I got a Crapsman that is better 'n 40 and it's virable speed and on switch work flawlessly.  Too bad I can't stand the bearing howl it makes  coz it's is so bad  I never use the thing any more

I'm thinking that if you got yourself a brush kit ( they are cheap and easy to install) that your toy would run like new again.

It might be necessary to re-cut the commutator  - - another easy  peasy trick -  where you just take a small hack saw blade and re cut the grooves on the commutator.  If you want thinner kerfs take the saw blade and run it flat against a grinder or abrasive belt to make it cut with no set to the teeth.   However  when you inspect the commutator you'll know if it's OK by whether the grooves are pronounced or not.

Loves me that virible speed

The bit about it coming on like gangbusters makes me wonder if there is a capacitor in the thing. Never have seen one  in a router.

Usually if you let the smoke out of them  it's a problem coz gettin' it back in is way difficult.
