Two planes in one day??

Featured Replies

Well, almost.    Getting caught up on a Chinese style edge plane build.   I even tried a bit of carving tonight ( Hide yer eyes, Mildred!) so, without far adoning-imag0052-2461-84.jpg?width=750That is a fence sitting under the plane. Two bolts come up through the fence, and into two square nuts IN the plane's sole.    Rounding the top for a better grip.  ning-imag0051-2461-75.jpg?width=750That round hole is an escapement.  With a bevel on the wedge, shavings just curl out this side.  Iron USED to be an old H-F skew chisel for a lathe ( sorry Arlin, needed a thick iron for this plane)   Iron is bedded at a slight skew, to help the shaving go out the side.    Might this be a Skew Rebate Plane?   ning-imag0053-2461-84.jpg?width=750The back porch.   Almost looks like it needs a couple tail lights?    Wedge was a royal bear to get just right.   same wood as the rest of the plane.    Top of the wedge is rounded, there is a bevel to match the way the iron sits, and it is further beveled to allow the "mouse hole" to work.

Wood is some 100 yr old Barn wood White Oak.   Well seasoned, I think. ning-imag0054-2461-95.jpg?width=750Close up of the business end of things.   There is a notch in the fence under the iron.  fence will be adjustable in and out.   It needs to clear the cutting edge when it is all the way in.

Well, one can do two planes in one day......

Steve, I like it! Nice carving and nice style, I see a little infill plane style in the carving at the top front, I know you probably did not mean it to be like that, but I like it.

That took some work mister, great job, so now we have a plane maker on The Patriot Woodworker! So, how's it roll?

there is a series of videos by a fellow from China.    Anything from a Frame saw ( in three shows, counting sharpening the "watchspring" blade)  to a Jack plane sized plane.    This is one of two rebate planes he made.   The other had a metal "skate" on it.  Link is to the Closed Captioned shows.
