May 13, 201412 yr I just finished this one up today. It started out as a wine rack plan in Wood magazine, but I left out the strips that keep the bottles from rolling and just going to use it as a book shelf. Last week I also got the ramp built on the deck I started last fall. I still need to put a railing around it, but I really don't want to. I'm liking the way it is now, and it's only about 22" high, but I know the insurance company is going to want it.
May 13, 201412 yr Nice projects Roy! That winerack turned out great with only shelves as a book case, great work around. Got a question, that ramp, is it supposed to be ADA compliant or handicap accessible at all? I was just curious about the transition at the ramp beginning.
May 13, 201412 yr Author From what I understand ADA is only mandatory for buildings with public access. This one doesn't quite make it, the slope is a little steeper than what they want, but it will be wide enough. I've still got to do some cement work on the bottom end so it would be a little tough to use right now. And of course ADA would require all the hand rails.
May 13, 201412 yr Great point Roy, sorry for even bringing the ADA up. You answered my question regarding the transition, that makes sense now, great work Roy! How is the school coming along?
May 13, 201412 yr Two great projects, Roy. The wine rack/book case is just grand. And, the ramp looks quite well done. Afraid, I'd have to side with the insurance co. though. But, a railing all the way around to the house would look really nice.
May 13, 201412 yr Yep Roy you got it going good here I am impressed. You'd be surprised how fast this guy could fly up that ramp even with a bit of a lip The only reason (I know of) to worry about ADA compliance on a private home is if city code requires it OR you are trying to get ADA to help pay for it. We were trying to get ADA to help pay for this one, they even put a no slip paint on the deck and ramp. I wish it had been a better picture of it but oh well.
May 13, 201412 yr Author The school is coming slow, but things seem to be moving along. The youth services group I'm working with has wrapped up the wood shop work for the year so I'm done with those little guys for awhile. On their campus they have a real nice residential facility that I think can take up to 50 kids. They've also got a couple buildings that aren't being used that sort of look like small elementary buildings. They are wanting me to move my print shop into one of the buildings in the next month or so. I've got a couple small offset presses, paper cutter, and 4 color t-shirt press and they think that would all fit into their summer program. I'd also have space there to have a room set up for drafting and some other stuff I'd like to do. They are pretty excited about having some vocational type opportunities on campus for the residential kids. I wasn't so sure about moving the wood shop in, but they are starting to make it real tempting. I'm going in tomorrow to look at it again and measure doorways to make sure things will fit. I don't know where it's all going to end up but it keeps plugging along.
