Salutations troops,
As many of you know there's a 2x4 contest among woodworkers each year.
Youtube is already buzzing with this years entries.
How about doing one here?
The "rules" are simple really, just do the best you can with one single 2x4.

The prize? You get an Honorable Salute from all involved.

I wonder IF this counts, as it USED to be a 2x4 of Oak

That dark brown thing, of course.

I could make a lot of pens with a 2x4 LOL

Would you really make pens? Seems about 25% of the board would be knots.
I have a heck of a time turning Douglas Fir due to that. Most of our 2x4's are DF now.

Steven..Where'd you get an Oak 2x4?

Guess if we extend it to Sawmill cuts it could change things.
If you search for the big contest they are talking about common 2x4's, not actual 2x4's.
We could make it simple right? i.e. Standard 2x4 from HD or Lowes?

note: The bar is a little higher this year, in my opinion this is the best use of a single 2x4 so far this year:

You Sir have brains in your head. As the good Doctor used to say.

To answer your question, Yes i would make pens. Each piece (for 2 piece pens) is only 2 1/4" long. For a one piece pen it's only about 2 1/2" long. I probably wouldn't use pine because it cracks easily but Oak would do. Since I am a wood turner that's about all I could make from a 2x4 other than a sword or wand LOL :D

It's Rolling Thunder time gentleman, Lord willing I'll check back in a few weeks.

I'm so ticked at our current CIC I'm hoping for some action Chesty would be proud of.

"Where does one get Oak 2x4s?"

Why from the rafters in a barn the fell down, of course.

Happen to know where I can also snag a Red oak 2x4, along with a couple white oak ones....State Secret, though.....
