May 21, 201412 yr  Got tired of fighting edge out of square, reversed cambered and other stuff from free-handed grinding. Time to add a jig, real high tech one (for me) Took the rest off the right hand side.   threw away the "bolt" that almost held it.   Modified a carriage bolt to replace it.   While the rest was off, drill a hole right in the center ( by eyeball) for a jig bolt.  The jig was then bolted to the rest, and a groove for the wheel was cut....by turning the grinder on.  A look at the jigYep, High Tech right there. Pine 3/4" scrap board.  Set at ~25 degrees to the wheel.  Now, HOW to get the iron the stay square to the wheel? Why more High Tech stuffA 1x1 pine slider, and two C clamps.  Finger clamp is there so I could take a picture.   I get the first c clamp on with an iron and get things close as I can. Check to make sure the iron is square to the slider's edge.  Check where the edge of the iron touches the wheel. Then add the second c clamp. BTW, that groove in the jig for the wheel was done by the grinder's wheel.   Best way to line things up.   Grind the new edges, and have a cup of H2O handy to dunk it in.   Grinds a nice hollow grind edge. Then off to the honing guide and the stones & Paper routeOne of these is a Dunlap and the other is a Lakeside iron.   Once they were honed up to 1000 grit, I installed the Dunlap iron in the Lakeside plane. Set it up for a fine cut, with the frog all the way to the rear. Pine test tracks at the ready, soNot too bad.  Turned out that the Dunlap iron still has a hint of camber to the edge, and cuts in the middle area.   Switched it out with the improved Lakeside iron, and a second test track of pineYeah, that's a bit better than it was.   As for the tight mouth?About as tight as I can get this one.  Like that reflection on the sole?   This plane just might work out... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

May 25, 201411 yr Nice jig, Steve. I'll keep this in mind. Perhaps make some other rests that can be swapped as needed.
