What is it? - Patriot Picking

Several weeks back I was out and ran across this old tool. It looked really cool and has a patent day of October 12 1897 on it.

The guy told me what it was but I thought he was pulling my leg, but I found the tool interesting enough I went on and purchased it as the price was right.

So I thought I would throw it out here and see if any of you know what this is.

ning-tool2-2129-95.jpgI have been told many things by people but most don't get anywhere near close. That part just look wicket.

So what is your guess on what kind of tool this is? I'll give you a little bit and then throw out a tip if no one is getting close.

I think this is from the Marquis de Sade collection. Actually, probably a cherry or olive pit remover.

It works well if you have bunions.

I think it's a tool setting jig of some sorts?

Gene Howe was right on top of it.

Charles Passmore of Fulton, IL patented these tools.

My great great grandfather was a cobbler in the 1800's so when I saw these I had to get them. They are used to stretch the shoe to give room for bunions.

I got this pair for 10.00.

Way to go Gene!

Hey no googling allowed on these!!! I am curious too Gene! TO THE PLANK WITH YE!!!!

On Gene's defense, John, how do you google images if you don't know the name of the item? I am curious for my own reference because there has been many items in the past that I was curious about and perhaps there is a way to google with images?

Grandpa had one. Wasn't sure that that was it's intended use, though. He was a farmer. Used lots of tools in unique ways. I think his maxim was "I can fix anything on this farm with a 12" screwdriver, baling wire and a crescent wrench." No hammer in the tractor tool box. The crescent had lots of ding marks, though.

My dad used the same maxim with the addition "If I can't fix it with a 12" screwdriver, baling wire and a crescent wrench, the problem is electrical." Grandpa never had electricity on the farm. No duct tape, either.
