Today while I was in Walmart, I met and talked to a WWII vet in a wheel chair. I always shake their hands and thank them. This guy was on a mountain the Pacific islands spotting Jap ships and subs. He detailed what his job was and the dangers involve. How ironic. I saw a History channel special about his job and how it change the course of the war.
The Japs couldn't operate safely there to reload/recharge.
He is a true war hero. By the way, he was waiting on his wife of nearly 65 years.

Sadly, I had to attend the funeral of a lifelong friend and a WWII Navy vet. You're right Ron that our heroes of the 40's are rapidly leaving us.

 

 

The Greatest Generation gave us so much. I wonder how they feel when they see what is happening today.

It is a dying breed for sure Ron. At the rate of 550 per day on average they are leaving us. It is going to be a sad day in our history when the last WWII veteran dies, just as it was a sad day when the last WWI American Veteran left us just a couple years ago, Frank Buckles, that was a very sad day in my heart. I wish I had sought out WWI veterans and talked to them personally.

 

Our daughter and her high school club will be visiting senior homes this summer where aged veterans reside, we have quite a few WWII veterans in this home, and she and her club are going to hang out, talk, and read book for them, and take walks around the grounds with them, I hope to God they open up to her and her friends and talk, what an experience.
