June 15, 201411 yr The other day, I found a file with a fancy handle stuck on it.   Just a small file for metal stuff.   I already had a chisel that needed a handle1-1/2" wide.   So, I went down to the Dungeon Shop, got the handle off of the file.   It needed to be re-sized a bit to fit the chisel.   Sanding belt was nice, but it was taking all morning.  Grinder was sitting there, so a few spins to make the fit close.    It just statrted, ok, and a hammer drove it homeLooks a little bit better?  This will be a paring chisel, so not much of hammer work.   Both items were a $1 at their sales.   Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
June 15, 201411 yr Cool handle . I have not had a need to make any lately, all my good chisels have good oak handles in them and the old chisels I just don't use anymore. June 15, 201411 yr Neat Fix! I couldn't figure out how to make the correct taper for this kind of handle. One day I was at Hobby Lobby and saw some child's modeling clay. Light bulb went on. Fill the cavity with clay, pull it out, perfect profile of hole. Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime Traveler and Purveyor of the Universe's Finest Custom Rolling Pins!
June 17, 201411 yr Great job Steve! Parts is parts, as long as they fit together in some way and with some modification, don't throw anything away folks!!!! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
June 17, 201411 yr I can't bring myself to throw any wood away really unless it's just shavings, and I even save some of those from exotic woods since I use that as filling material. I caught myself the other day tossing out a split piece of 1x and stopped and got it out of the trash, because i figure I can use it still for some small thing that I may dream up or get asked to do later.
