Tool chest #2: NEW Raised Panels

Featured Replies

Had to remake a couple panels, as the existing ones were a bit too narrow to work with.   They were 10-3/8" wide, but, I needed 12-1/2" wide ones.    Scrounged through the wood stash outside.    Had a few 1x10 pine boards.    Used to be under the mattress on the old bed as a box frame to support the OSB  "box spring".   Found one that wasn't too warpped, and cut it down to about 25"  long, twice.    Still needed a little extra width....found a couple 1x4s about the right length.

Jointed a couple edges, and glued both NEW panels up, at the same time

Let this set for awhile.    Later, got them out of the clamps, and cleaned up. Got out some planes

The #9 was for the shrter ends, the #5 jack was for leveling the panel, and the long sides.  The little "Knucklehead was for clean-up, and that wards was for cutting rebates.   To learn about raising a panel, look up a video by paul Sellers.    I used the bench planes to make a beveled edge on the outside face

On the end grin ends, one goes at an angle, uphill.   width of the bevel is about 1" wide.   Then, rotate and do anothe end, then the long grain sides.    Next, I flipped the board over, and cut rebates on the inside faces, using the wards #78.   Two panels, and a 78 set deep.   Makes nice shavings

But, due to the way one has to grip the front end on these things, I wore a hole into my left thumb, about half way between the nail, and the knuckle.    Test fitting all the way along, using the block plane to fine tune things to fit in the gooves of the frames.

I am bushed, need to get a shower, and get ready to go to my "Day Job" at 1900 hrs.    Going to be a long night...

Looks too much like work LOL.

I'm with Lew and Charles.  I'm an electrical kind of guy.  It is easier.

One down three to go.    31-7/16" long, by 22-7/16" at the legs.  "Box" is about 17-1/2 "  deep, before a cleat and a pine floor is added.   Should be long enough to hang a couple full sized hand saws on the lid...
