Kitchen Table Finish - help please

Featured Replies

I just got contacted by my neighbors. Thy want aa new ustom kitchen table. The design and build are pretty straight forward, small rectangular and no legs. It will be build from red oak and to keep it from warping I am planning on bread board ends. A wall mount and some supports under the table top. My question is what would be the best finish to use? I have thought of poly, laquer and a whole gambit of thiings. It will be subjected to hot, cold, wet and how kows. SO I want something that will be long lasting, look great and easy to maintain. Any and all ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wayne

Although lacquer dries quickly, I would use several applications of oil based poly. For me, I seem to get better results and a smoother finish. The heavy, open grain of the red oak should get sealed with the more viscous oil based poly.

I have used the poly before with good results. But I have to say that I would lean towards Endurovar by General Finishes. I sprayed it on my A&C bathroom vanity in satin finish and it went on smooth and has held up great. John Moody uses it a lot and likes it as is.

I have sprayed the Enduro Var from General Finishes on many projects, even outdoor ones. It holds up well and was originally use to seal bowling alley's when they were made out of real maple. It is not cheap, but it does go on well and you can apply multiple coats fairly quickly. It is water based so the clean up is good.

Thanks for the informations guys. Really appreciate it.

John, not worried about the price, just the protection.

Where is the best place to get it?

Thanks

Wayne

Wayne, I have had to order it from Rockler or Woodcraft since we don't have a General Finished dealer in the area any more. At one time I could buy it local. Check and see if you have a General Finishes dealer in your area, if not you will have to order.

John

We have a Rockler store about 30 miles from me. I'll call and see if they carry it. Really wished we had a Woodcraft Store someplace closer. Although they ship fast and have great customer service.

A little late to this party but will give my 2 cents anyhow  :)   General Finishes is definitely my choice for such a table.

Finished the drawings this morning. Going to meet with them today and see if it fits their budget.

Looks like I will just order the General Finish online.

Appreciate the help guys.

Ok since you asked so nicely Lew :)

They are coming over Saturday to look at the drawings and discuss the money end.

I'll get some pics as I go through it ( if they approve it ) and post them.
