Whenever I've done a lot of template routing I've always preferred double coated tape to hold the template to the workpiece. At one point I had a very good product from 3M that I really liked, but I've forgotten the name of it and can't locate it anymore. So I tried a lot of alternatives including carpet tape, woodturner's tape from LV, and a handful of others I can't recall. All of them were less than satisfactory, they either didn't hold well enough, or they stuck so firmly I couldn't separate the parts....or even worse, I couldn't get the tape off the remaining piece cleanly. So my current roll is about gone and I started looking around for some more, I needed a lot of for my serpentine drawer sideboard. I found this stuff on Amazon, and love it. Best of all it's not too expensive. It has really good holding power, and comes off the remaining piece without a lot of effort. So if you use a lot of this stuff, this might be just what you're looking for.

I've been using an off brand, fiber reinforced stuff for some lathe projects. Having the same problem with removing residue, although Acetone does help. Thanks for the heads up.
