Hi guys and gals!

I am starting my third acoustic guitar build. I have a Youtube channel, and all the photos in my posts are screenshots from those videos. I post a video every Friday, so this thread will be updated as much as possible weekly, unless life gets in the way. It is bound to be long, as I build with hand tools and show step by step progress.

To kick things off i thought i would share the video I produced introducing the woods for this build.

To begin this build I'll start with the neck. That begins with a neck blank which is in this instance a Honduran mahogany blank that is 31 inches long by 3 inches wide and 1.25 inch thick.

My opinion/preference is that Honduran mahogany is the perfect neck wood. It is strong, straight grained and stable, and light weight for it's size. I build with whatever I can scrounge up, but I'm always really happy to have Honduran.

As usual, the blank is not flat to start out with.

As a side note you will notice there is no apron in site. Virginia summers prohibit this article of clothing, lol.

So we need to make said blank flat and square, and remove any twist.

To check for twist I use a couple of scraps from the same board as mprovised winding sticks.

Many people will say that this is not accurate enough, but truthfully we just need a general idea of twist. I need to make a set of short winding sticks for this purpose, as my regular ones are about 16" long and not suitable for luthiery.

So I place the blank in my vise and employ the Jack.

and after a few passes we see how far out the blank is. You can see where the plane has cut and where it has not.

So we continue until one face is flat.

Then we check an edge for square

And find out it isn't. Back in the vise it goes.

and good old No. 6 makes her right.

The opposite face and edge are trued up in the same manner, using the first face and first edge as Reference points for square.
