Does this count as thimking outside the bowl? Was trying to see if it was possible to cut bowl rings from a blank that was not a complete circle. This is the result.

The initial blank was 5"w x 11"l. Some interesting cutting and LOTS of masking tape later I had the curved portions of this. Just had to finish it out to see what I had done and ended up with the 'Franken-bowl' you see here.

The step came from an exploded 'ring' that I couldn't find all of the pieces for.
