I've done some time to time upholstery work: re-upholstering dining chair seats, sewing open seams, replacing panels, fixing broken sinuous springs, reattaching buttons, decorative nails, etc.

My grandson's new wife brought me a vintage rocker that she thought was about 100 years old in her family. I'm just getting started on it. A very good upholsterer friend of mine that specializes in antiques, said it looked "cobbled together". So I'm proceeding and learning things along the way. It appears that the structure is original, but may have had a quick and dirty surface replacement with vinyl. Every time I do something a pile of black crud dust falls out and I need to sweep it up.

Well, it's progressing, got the webbing on the springs, a fabric cover (one layer of burlap, please ignore the "Decaf" labeling, one layer of heavy cloth). The dowels along the edge have been re-attached -- major problem here is two large boxes of nails and I didn't have one that was both the right diameter and right length, but I got it. Fabric is picked out and acquired. Now trying to find a source for the padding/filling. There's a couple of upholstery shops nearby (the two upholsterers that I know have retired), and if needed, there's a supplier a bit further away that I've used before for materials.

Well, some re-gluing joints, some touch up repair, spokeshave on the bottom of the rocker rails, and the rest of the upholstery.

I happened to think that one of my first pieces of furniture was a rocking chair. When my oldest child was born, I loved holding her on my lap as a baby in that chair. This grandson is my oldest grandchild and they're expecting my oldest great grandchild. Hoping it gets to sit on its dad's lap on that chair.
