June 14Jun 14 Popular Post There was 4 planks in the old bench..One had disappeared, still had 3 ( may have burned that 4th one?)Handsome, ain't they? Ends needed to be...gone..Seems they just might be oak? Then, run these through the Lunch Box Planer a few times, along with a few other cut-offs laying around..Pine was used to get the planer set for depth..took a few passes..The "After" One plank, I could only do one face, as the other face...Shiny spot is a nail of some sort, doesn't go the entire way through...first pass, and that showed up.... Shavings were supposed to wind up in this Trash Can..Kind of missed, didn't it?Still need to work on the edges..Otherwise, it might be a bit rough to get a panel out of this...Might need ti rip the sap wood off, too? Boards are now all at 5/8" thickness...will see what I can cobble up...Stay tuned..
June 14Jun 14 Popular Post Probably just enough material to create something to fill that spot in the end of the sideboard!
June 15Jun 15 Author Popular Post Working in the shop on a Monday Morning? So..bad spots needed to be cut out..Small red circle, is a nailCut this section out, worked on the edges a bit..Yes, still using the old Frame Saw. Since I size the plane to the size of the work getting done...this is a Millers Falls No. 11, Type 2 Junior Jack plane.Jointed a few edges....Goal was for zero gaps....not that worried about squared ends right now, until I decide what the final lengths need to be..Other 2 planks were also cut down...the one with that sap wood stripe?Combo square to mark a line for the Bandsaw to follow...then plane the sawn edge. Along with the other edges..Test fit ..Not too hateful? That Square of Spalted Ash...did not want the live edges, as for the split going on..Seemed that the blade in the bandsaw was starting to get a wee bit dull..burns both sides of the cut...we have ways of cleaning that up..Works for me.. Was a rather busy day with the plane..So, am now in the plan stage..And see what I can "cobble up" from the lumber supply...Stay tuned..
June 16Jun 16 Author Lap Top Writing Desk, maybe...Ash for the lid? Oak for the box? Sized to fit normal sized paper, and not for Legal Pad size..? ( already have one of those, filled with tools)Might see IF I can add a place to hold a few pens? Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is working on a "Plan" right now.....then use "Moose & Squirrel Express " to deliver the plan to me...Stay tuned..
June 16Jun 16 My first woodworking class (after Jr High shop class) was with Tage Frid. He loved the frame saws. Though I gasped when he hammered a piece of wood on the top of a table saw to get it to fit in a joint.
June 17Jun 17 I can’t zoom in enough on the endgrain, but the 3 original planks look like white oak after you cleaned them up. Should be called white gold these days.
June 19Jun 19 Author Hmmm. Ash can be a lid if I make a panelMight save shorty for a pen holder?Save this one for across the top at the back...where a pair of hinges will connect to the lid..Something like this..4 pieces of Oak to surround the box..Just enough clamps? Set this aside, for now..3 of the sides ..all were different widths...we have ways..Setting the height of the blade...ran both sides through and the back piece...Next up?Need to change out that blade, I guess? Burnt both sides of the cut..Plus, these 2 need to match each other...we have ways..Lay a board to check for any gaps or high spots..Decided it was Quitting time...so..Sweep the floor, call it a day..
June 22Jun 22 Author Popular Post 1 hour or so in the shop, this morning...soHad these laid out, might as well grab a saw..And at least try to split a line or 3...Then a mallet and chisel..Chop half way down into the outside face...then..flip over, and finish the chop out..Trace around these "finger" with a sharp pencil..then repeat the Saw/chop/flip/chop routine..and try a dry fit..With the help of a mallet, of course....Checked that this is square..And that the grooves line up...one corner is now done did..only 3 more to do...Stay tuned..
June 23Jun 23 Author Corners #3 and #2 were done did..Worked on Corner #4 this morning...cut a plywood floor panel to fit...and glued things together..Film in a Little bit..Stay tuned...
June 24Jun 24 Author #4 corner tried to be "Difficult", but...finally, after a dry fit to get the size of the 1/4" plywood panel, cut that, then plane and edge or 2 to get to final fitted size...clamps and Glue..Checking for square..All 4 corners,,,Side to the left is the Front of the box...when the clamps do come back off...I need to plane the edge to match the sides, might take more that a few swipes?I can also start to fit the hinge piece..Intend to rebate the underside a bit..and maybe round-over the top edges...the..Square this panel up, rebate the underside, incise the hinges, and add a Pencil/Pen Stop near the bottom edge. Might even see about a pencil/pen Holder for inside the box?Fun part? Will be the angle the lid meets the hinge board....Stay tuned
June 24Jun 24 Author Clamps came off, this morning. Glue joints were cleaned up...Bottom was leveledTakes a longer plane, to bridge around a corner..Hand plane to match bevels...Smaller plane was used to flatten a lid....once I got the panel squared up..Lid and the part it will attach to...meeting angles needed planed. Both needed rebates milled..Added a "Back stop"...which another meeting bevel was needed to sit up close to the back stop..Gives me a Finger-lift Edge...Back stop got fancy...Glue and clamps came back out..Back stop got glued in place, along with..The part the lid swings on...edges were rounded over...will do the same to the lid..Hinges?Whether to surface mount these, or...incise them down flush with the surface...hmmStay tuned...
June 25Jun 25 Author Decided I had just better surface mount these..Because, I can't use this..Left-handed. Something about the Right thumb? Would have to bury the hinge barrels as well...PIP..Went around, filling in gaposis..square pegs into square holes...and trying to round over an edge or 3..Started with a plane, then sanded things smooth...Added a Latch...open the lid?Underside of the lid details..Just the perfect size for normal sheets of paper..Will try to brush on a coat of stain, later...we'll see...Ser Uncle Charles decided to attack me left foot's toes...Stay tuned..
June 26Jun 26 Author Popular Post Stained, this morning..Inside and..Outside...Corner details..And a look at the back..Stain is Minwax "Red Mahogany"...brushed on, then wiped down...might try a coat of varnish, tomorrow? Stay tuned, almost done..
