April 29Apr 29 Popular Post Well... I made another wooden cross like this one that I made and posted earlier.I started by cutting some rough blanks of Douglas Fir on my table saw. I made them a little larger and close to what the final dimensions will be. You will note I have some saw blade burns marks.Next, I used my new Japanese Hira Kanna pull plane to clean up the stock.Next, I start mitering and radiusing the various sub assemblies that together will make the cross.Next, using my Dowel Cutting Jig, I cut some 1/4" dia dowel that is used to connect the cross assembly membersThen I start gluing and doweling all the members together as shown here. When it was assembled and lightly sanded, I finished it by giving it three coats of blonde shellac. So originally I made my first one out of teak and gave it to my wife this past Christmas. This one out of Douglas Fir that I just finished was intended for some church friends of ours that are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. They are in their 90s.But my wife likes the lighter one better and they have some teak furniture. So she's getting it and they are getting the teak one. Here's the two side by side. Thanks for looking!Cheers!MrRick Edited April 29Apr 29 by MrRick
