March 11Mar 11 That is sweet!I'm very partial to turnings that leave natural inclusions unfilled. It really showcases Mother Natures natural beauty.
March 12Mar 12 Author Thank you everyone for all the kind words, they make me proud, and Gerald I must admit this is the first cottonwood i ever had that was brown don't know why unless they way i dried it has something to do with it. I have developed my own way to dry my turning wood, leave it as big as possible, put it in a barrel, put a lid on and put it in the back room of my metal building, the lid is not sealed just on so some moisture can escape but slowly, then resist temptation to look for about 6 months.
March 12Mar 12 Awesome turning Rusty. Cottonwood can have some beautiful grain patterns and looks. The seed pods sure stir up my allergies though especially when they fill the air floating around. You did this piece mighty proud.
March 13Mar 13 Looks a whole lot better then the fluffy crap that blows all over and down our street and clogs everything up. Hard to believe your beautiful work comes from the same tree!
March 13Mar 13 Author Finished up another pot yesterday, same tree same burl little different shape ⁰⁹more in the works trying to decide on a shape for next project. Decided it's time to clean out the back room like that is really going to happen.
March 13Mar 13 Author Thanks' Dave I don't know that I deserve all the praise I'm getting but I sure enjoy it.
March 13Mar 13 Author Popular Post Cleaning the back room one chunk at a time 😁Start with this and see what is in there This one offered pucker power. But it stayed together ,now for a break.
March 14Mar 14 Author Thanks guys this one was challenging to say the least, almost a full bottle of ca to get to this point. Had to fill a couple spots just to keep it together for turning, not to my liking but you do what you got to do in the end I feel good about the results. Got more wood to turn but the old back said enough for a while
March 17Mar 17 Very nice that is awsome! I had a huge cottonwood plank and I tried to turn couple bowls out of it and it did not go well at all the tear out was unbelievable but it was all side grain.
March 17Mar 17 Author Thanks Geezer for the kind words. Cotton wood can be challenging usually fuzzies are the problem but tearout is not uncommon, sharp tools are the best answer and on bowls andit's not if you're going to sand but how much and start coarse enough to get it done quickly. Good luck and sorry to give instructions without you asking.
March 18Mar 18 No appreciatte it, but I've turned a lot of bowls and certain woods just don't cooperate, beech is another you can turn green and it all goes well but it warps badly and it too suffers from small tear out no matter how sharp or slow a pass it just will not take it down to a point worth sanding. Like I said it was a huge slab of cottonwood so I had the grain working against me too.
