December 28, 2025Dec 28 I recently acquired this plane. It is a 5/16 grooving plane. It has been in the fle market I bought it from for at least six or eight months. After I brought it home I noticed this. Some kind of critter. I know it is possible that was made a long time ago, and that is the only spot on this plane. Does anyone think I have cause to worry? Thanks.
December 30, 2025Dec 30 You don't have anything to worry about. As a precaution use a Q-tip and dab some ammonia over it and the holes on the end. Let it sit for a few minutes. Wipe off. Then dab some mild soapy water over it and wipe dry. Then you're good to go.
December 30, 2025Dec 30 Nice score on the plane Mike. I agree with Rick. I don't think you have any reason to be concerned. Those bugs left the building a long time ago. If it was recent there would be some powder residue. I often use hydrogen peroxide and a soft bristle toothbrush to clean up old wood tools.
December 30, 2025Dec 30 Author Thanks, guys. I saw it and the price was good, and the tool is in excellent shape, so I got over excited and did not notice the "bug tracks" 🙂 There are about 5 or 6 moulding planes left, all at about the same price. They have been there a while. I may go back and look and see if there is one of them that I might want. I don't do a ton of moulding work, but it might be nice to have one or two laying around.
December 30, 2025Dec 30 Do you ever make furniture, boxes, shelves, and yes even moulding for trim work? Any of these? Get them! You'll be happy you did.
December 30, 2025Dec 30 Author I do build furniture and boxes. I prefer to build guitars, but if I need a piece, or if I don't have the proper woods for guitar I will build a piece of furniture with what i have. Edited December 30, 2025Dec 30 by Handfoolery
