Bath Redo

After the kitchen redo we had plans to redo the upstairs bathroom, but life got in the way, and I was side lined for a couple of years. April 24th I was one year cancer free, so we felt we were crazy enough up to a new challenge. There is a hall closet adjacent to the bath and behind the closet is ductwork and the chimney. We removed the closet & the wall next to the tub and built a wall in the hall a gain of 12 square feet. The new space left us 50" between the chimney & the new wall, perfect for the sink countertop 49" wide.

In the existing sink space, we installed a walk-in shower. The toilet location will remain but turn 90 degrees. The old sink drained into the wall to the main drain we abandoned; the new shower required a new 2" drain through the floor all the way to the basement. We have a drop ceiling below and we fished the drain down an interior wall into the basement. Sink drain was connected to the 2" shower drain. We install Pex from the basement and abandoned all the copper pipe.

Patti & I did all the demo, carried it downstairs to the dumpster, cut the tub in half & slid in down the steps on a tarp. Carried upstairs the new shower, 4 pieces + trim, 7 sheets of drywall & 3 sheets of cement board. We paid $20.00 to have the shower door delivered upstairs, we're not crazy.

The chimney was just dusty when we demoed the wall, so we decided to apply brick sealer and leave it exposed. We put a small bulkhead above the sink area to hide the transition from old ceiling plaster to new drywall. All new window trim & exhaust fan. We have a shower in the basement, so this was a slow project during the summer a few hours a day. It is done and in use and like Patti says, "we got this".

A really nice job, Bob. I'd say Patti was right....you'all got this!

Excellent work Bob. Can't imagine the challenge getting that old cast iron claw foot tub down the stairs.

I really like the shower door design, especially the "barn door" track. Very classy looking. The exposed brick is really cool too.

You and Patti did good...real good!
