My Newest Moulding Plane

Here are some photos of recently made #2 (1/4") Hollow Moulding Plane.

It's entirely made out of Spalted Maple.

This is the right side of plane.

This is the grain pattern on left side of plane.

Here's the wedge holding the blade in place. I made the blade out of 1095 steel.

Here's the blade shape. It cuts a hollow groove in the work piece. Thus the name "Hollow" moulding plane.

This plane is a joy to use.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers!

Wholly cow, that's a flat out work of art Rick! I love the lumber you used on this one. I gotta get into these and make mine, I'll be referencing back to your topics for sometime for guidance, thanks for sharing here Rick and out standing job.

So, the hollow groove, mainly for esthetics in the piece you are making? Like a fluted column or such?

AMAZING! Absolutely beautiful tool Rick. I can only give you two thumbs up because that's all I have.

Thanks John!

A hollow moulding plane can be used to create arch-shaped profiles in wood and is a key tool for custom-cutting any molding profile by combining it with a round plane. They can be combined with other planes too make awesome profiles and shapes. The versatility of these planes, often sold in numbered pairs, allows woodworkers to replicate historical molds and create complex shapes like coves, beads, and Ogee profiles. There's all kinds of neat profiles you can make for mouldings, box tops, tables, etc etc.
