November 2, 2025Nov 2 I am building a hosier cupboard. it calls for 1.5 sheets of 3/4" A-1 Grade oak plywood. and 2 sheets of 1/4" plywood. I already have 1 sheet of 3/4" quarter sawn white oak and 7/8 of a sheets of 1/4 quarter sawn white oak. That appears to be $300+ of new wood to be purchased. I have the 40 bf of oak (alredy in house) and 15bf of 4/4 birch for drawer side and runners. Do you see any issue using oak for the drawer sides and runners? I have a lot of rough sawn oak. I will post the project after I get all the materials in house.
November 2, 2025Nov 2 I think the red oak would make excellent runner. I have also used it for drawer side without any problems.

November 2, 2025Nov 2 I'm looking forward to seeing this, I've always admired those cabinets. No place at our house to put one. Edited November 2, 2025Nov 2 by Fred W. Hargis Jr
November 2, 2025Nov 2 White oak with a couple coats of wax makes an outstanding drawer runner! One shop I worked for used shop made white oak drawer guides by default. I see no problem using solid wood anywhere in the project, assuming you account for wood movement as needed. I use very little plywood these days, I like working with solid a lot better.
November 2, 2025Nov 2 For those interested, a late friend of mine wrote an excellent book on Hoosier cabinets. She was a superb cabinet and furniture maker. https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-hoosier-cabinet-in-kitchen-history_nancy-r-hiller/1397990/item/71652720/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_new_condition_books_high_14637440387&utm_adgroup=&utm_term=&utm_content=593819619485&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=14637440387&gbraid=0AAAAADwY45hMvPUocEisq-DIKimSiIG9y&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgpzIBhCOARIsABZm7vE5Qqgem43_z3DSvo177wvhweYhtEjXYycih1Aj1toNmKh1BrywPWgaAlC4EALw_wcB#idiq=71652720&edition=71713141
