So far I'm thinking an area of around the size of a one car garage plus a tad more, I won't need much. I'd like to build it if I have the opportunity, raised foundation, wood floor, board and batton exterior, slate shingled roof, old repurposed windows from an old home or church would be cool, I'd have a potbelly stove in it too, and an outside overhang area where I can put a forge and anvil for some blacksmithing. A side dutch door entrance, and a barn door with windows at one end. 🙂

John, that certainly sounds neat!  

I know you've been thinking of SC, so you might want to consider a mini-split for our hot summers.

SC is more than likely Jim, looking at the area in Red I outlined on the map. That's probably a must isn't it, if I hope to work in the shop in the warmer months! Do you have any recommendations for cooling the shop or basically any name brand system would work for the square footage?

I've used a 1 ton window unit for 25 years.  Never had issues but I do pull it out every year and clean the EVAP core of dust.

 

My shop space is 420 SQ ft.

Hi John, my shop is called a golf cart garage by the builder.  6' OH door, 10 x 18.  (The MG fits!)  I had 3 quotes for the smallest mini split, two over $7K, and one at $3300!  The low price was by the HVAC contractor that did our house when built.  It's a Daikin, which was the same brand as the higher bidders quoted.  It heats and cools.  The builder refused to offer insulation for the garages, but I cut a scuttle and was able to blow it in the attic.

 

Never been to the Greenville area, but I have heard it's a beautiful and desirable area.   As you get toward the "upstate", there are seasons.  I recall seeing an ad for a lumber supplier in Laurens, which is in that area.  Aiken, which is out of your selected area, is another area that I've heard is nice. 

 

As an aside, I just read a book about a SC revolutionary war hero, Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox."  He is highly regarded and his name appears on cities, national forests, etc.  The was a Disney TV show about him when I was a kid.  The book dispels many myths about his life.

 

Best of luck with your retirement destination.  Your property tax bill will be a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for the information Jim, appreciate it much! Not sure if I'll have insulation or not, hadn't even thought of it but makes sense we should. I was hoping the mini split was more a DIY!

We like that area up there Jim, for the season reason, seems we may get a little snow fall now and then too, something we aren't accustomed to here in SO Cal, but been wanting to have it, and the occassional white stuff a couple inches seems to be the norm up there for a couple months, that'll be fun for us 🙂 Laurens is supposed to be a wonderful place for retirees, I'll check out the lumber store even if we don't end up there. Our friends live in Aiken, it is nice, we have visited there many times, and it's not completely out of the question yet.

I think that's not the only thing that'll be a pleasant surprise Jim, we'll be moving from an average of $4.50 a gallon gasoline to something in the area of $2.50 per gal, and from a summer electric bill of nearly 500 bucks a month to around 140 a month, and just over all quality of living will be a pleasant surprise I am sure, we can't wait.
