For those who aren't aware of this...

 

I used to try to stand the crown up against the fence-dangerous and not fun, especially with larger crown.

My miter saw only moves like the top image, so I had to do the other cuts with the crown upside down and the bottom edge against the fence.  A good blade will prevent tear out.

 

Just finished the crown on our Murphy bed.  Mother's happy.

Every time I cut crown I have to read a cheat sheet because everything is upside down and backwards.  I did a large living room for an elderly friend several years back.  She was extremely frugal and bought the material up front.  I had exactly 3 extra feet.  Most stressful job I've ever done.

My philosophy is that every time you change something, it's an opportunity to make an error.

 

My preference is to hold the stock upside down and at the appropriate angle.  Make a jig to hold it if necessary.  Then you can just switch the saw from 45 degrees left to 45 degrees right (or whatever the corner angle is.)
