Popular Post steven newman Posted July 27 Popular Post Report Posted July 27 Since I am currently between Projects...might as well get things ready for the next Project.... The Sharpening Bench? Is a spot on the Kitchen Countertop, right beside the Kitchen Sink....as I use water stones now a days... First up..a Shelton No.9...Had lots of issues..but the iron needed a bit of work done.... Frog bolts were not even snugged up...Frog set way too far back Edge of the iron? Not the best..kind of rolled up...we have ways.. First stone..a 280 grit....followed by.. The 1000 grit Blue Stone...there is also 1500 grit stone...and finally.. The 6000 grit stone...I also made sure the chipbreaker sat gap free ( couple of whacks with a hammer to lower a bumped up center..) assemble things up.. BTW..the back of this iron was NOT flat...it is now...this was before the iron even saw the stones...one other issue.. That bolt-thingy that the wheel is supposed to turn on? Well, it was turning along with the wheel...removed the bolt, monged up the threads a bit, oil & Pliers to get it back into place...run the wheel back and forth to make sure the bolt stay put. Test Track is about the same as Mr. Cosman uses...mine isn't as large, though...but it is the same Clear Soft Maple he uses.. Took a couple trips to get the depth set up just right... Good enough for the Girls I run around with... Stay tuned...More irons to sharpen.. John Morris, HARO50, Al B and 6 others 9 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 27 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 27 During the last Project, or so...Noticed the Keen Kutter No. KK-4c.. Was having a bit of trouble..so, today it's iron got a trip to the Sharpening Bench.. Usual set up... Started here with the 280 grit..both faces of the iron and the chipbreaker ( was a bit gappy, and rough)..and a BIGGY Screwdriver... This time around, I skipped the 1000 grit stone...went to the 1500 grit stone instead....finally.. Ended up with the 6000 Grit stone. One towel to protect the "Benchtop", and another to keep things clean.... Set the chipbreaker back from the edge about 1mm.... Take this to the plane back in the shop..about the 3rd try down the Cosman Test Track...(#2 was way too thin for me) Not too shabby? Calipers? Caliper reads in 0.001" markings...shaving barely moved the needle... Almost a see-through shaving? So, what is next on the "List"? (L-R) Spare 2-3/8" wide Stanley Clipped box....A Stanley No. 31 iron and chipbreaker, also 2-3/8" wide...and the iron and chipbreaker out of the Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11... Might do the 4-1/2c's iron next.. Stay tuned HARO50, Al B, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 6 others 9 Quote

Popular Post Grandpadave52 Posted July 27 Popular Post Report Posted July 27 Keep it up and pretty soon you'll have shavings so thin you won't be able to see them. Headhunter, aaronc, lew and 4 others 6 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted July 28 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 28 Monday's Sharpening...started with this one.. 2-3/8" wide...seems there was a gap between the iron and chipbreaker...iron has the "Triangle" logo... 3 Stones today...280 grit, 1500 grit, and the 6000 grit.....wipe things down after each stone...then check for gaposis... Assemble the plane, and take it for a test drive on the soft maple.. Plane is a Stanley No. 4-1/2c, Type 11...iron does have a slight camber to it... Shaving measured out to be 0.002" thick.....close enough for the Girls I run around with... Grandpadave52, lew, Headhunter and 3 others 6 Quote
