June 24, 20251 yr Popular Post Inspired by my plant stand design. Three legs up to the hub. Power cable runs up one leg. Mostly CNC work, but a little drilling and tapping and routing and sanding. More sanding and some finish to apply to come. Walnut scraps, a lighting kit, and a shade from the jungle store. Switch is a 3-way switch, but with the LED bulb I bought it is only ON, ON, and OFF, OFF. Might have to dig out the incandescent bulbs I retired when I upgraded my house to LEDs. For detail continuity the slope of the legs and the outer bevel on the hub all match the slope of the shade. Always told my students when they designed lights to consider the shape and detail of any shade they were going to use as they iterated. 4D Edited June 24, 20251 yr by 4DThinker
June 24, 20251 yr Beautiful Lamp! Skip the 3-way, go to Grand Brass, they have a socket with a dimmer built into it. I use them on just about all the lamps I build. Here's a link, 'Dimmers' start about a 1/3 of the way down the page https://grandbrass.com/sockets-lamp-holders/e-26-base-lamp-sockets/e-26-metal-shell-sockets/

Thanks for that link. The dimmers look like they work with LED bulbs. The irony is that for one or even 10+ bulk price they are each more expensive than that entire lamp kit with cord, harp, etc., with free shipping from Amazon. 4D
June 24, 20251 yr Quality costs money and with my lamps it's a price I'm willing top pay. People really like my lamps, when I show them the dimmer feature they really like them. You have a good design, go for the next step. June 24, 20251 yr Author There are two variations of LED bulbs out there, and some come with internal circuitry to work with standard incandescent dimmer switches. I have a mix of them in my house. The Amazon ones you linked to appear to be what I already have, which would work with certain LED bulbs but not all of them. I do agree with you that quality costs money, but this lamp is for me and not something I'm selling. I may switch out the bulbs I bought with ones I already have to see if they'll work with the switch I have. BTW, I appreciate your input. 4D
June 25, 20251 yr Love the lamp 4D. Very cool. Sylvania makes 3-way LED bulbs. Work identical to the incandescent type. We have several in use. I usually get mine at Menards (Feit) but Wally World, Lowes, Home Depot carry them also. Most common are 40/60/100 but some carry 50/100/150 too.
June 25, 20251 yr Author Thanks GPDave. I ordered a couple from Amazon late yesterday. Knew about them, but didn't have any in my light bulb stash. I have the parts for another one in the works today. The bottom of the hub being cut right now on my CNC. A stick of what I think is white oak, chopped up and glued back together to make a 6/4 x 5" x 5" block to use. I'll use what is left of my red zebra wood to make the legs. I've got another light hardware kit and another shade to use up. 4D
June 27, 20251 yr Author A few more scraps used up to shine a bit more light around. White Oak for the hub, and mostly red zebra wood for the legs. Same toolpaths as used for the walnut version. 4D
