carpenter vs. woodworker/cabinetmaker/joiner

I sometimes have to explain to people that I'm not really a "carpenter" (though I sometimes do carpentry), but a woodworker.

I subscribe to a picture framing trade magazine and saw this interesting article today.

Have been both....a Woodworker...and a Carpenter....one set of skills will help the other set of Skills....they tend to complement each other.

They would work as a "Joiner"during the summer months...and when the weather got too cold to work outside, they became Furniture makers.....doors, tables, chairs, benches, shelves, chests and Chest of Drawers.   Next Spring..after the planting was done, they would repair any thing that broke, tools made of wood, fences, build or repair barns....and even a wooden Bridge, as needed...

The "Shingle" they hung up simply said  "Joiner".....

Great article and subject matter here. Love the history and perspective.

Who knew a hammer had 'Lips'
