I'm reading a "vintage" FWW issue that talks about the steps to dimension a piece of lumber.   I always learned this as FEW TEL, whether doing by hand, machine, or combination.

 

  • F - flatten one Face on a jointer or by plane
  • E - flatten one Edge  on a jointer or by plane
  • W - cut piece to Width, parallel to the prior edge with table saw or hand saw
  • T - plane to even Thickness on planer or hand plane
  • E - square cut one End
  • L - cut to Length
