At lunch, I watched a video on tools to buy at HD for less than $20.   It was interesting, but the most interesting part was to look around.  He gave two examples, one was a three piece set of pry bars that was 65 cents more than the single smaller tool.   Another was F-clamps in a set of 4 that was just marginally more expensive than a single one.  Another was comparing two brands of comparable tools where one was significantly cheaper than the other (both reputable brands).

So it pays to check out the whole bay of tools if you are about to buy something.

For me, one of those "bays" is Amazon.  Selections there are sometimes of questionable quality, but then when you see a "deal" at a Big Box, you gotta know they buy it as cheap as they sell it, and quality is not the first thought when you see "SALE" on the display.

He does make some great videos, though.  And many products are worth the trip to my local HD.

I saw this on another forum a few weeks back. The title here made me think of it. Just never know what is behind what the eyes see with anything. For my thoughts you know the industry was and still is full of this. I'm adding a small quote that came with the pic.

"Door was in a house we're currently working on. The door was rubbing the head jamb so I planed it off and found that the stiles and rails are red oak veneer over poplar. The doors were purchased in the 90's for solid red oak."

you want solid wood, you're going to pay for it.

My son in law had to trim some bi-fold doors at his house and was asking for some stuff to do so. He was complaining the doors were solid oak and very heavy. I said I'd bet this months SS check that those doors weren't solid oak, explaining that a lot of them were particle board or flake board covered with veneer. No, he said, the builder did real high quality stuff at hos house....they were solid oak. Bringing my tools back he mentioned I was right, they were flake board covered with veneer. It's very hard anymore to find solid oak doors; at least around here.
