They were a better shingle, but still only as good as the insurance that covers it..

GREAT to have you back posting with us Jack. Roofing obviously kept you busy. Looks great too.

I'm too old to do that anymore, but of the home improvement jobs I've done roofing was the most strenuous. I've only done 2, and after the first one I said never again. You know how that goes. It's a good thing it doesn't need to be done that often.

Sounding like the old guy, I was the kid who schlepped the bundles on my shoulder up the ladder.  Strong back, weak mind.

Now they are lifted to the peak with a boom truck.

I’m afraid I bought all mine several squares at a time and carried them up by hand..

I knew how to do the roof with three tap shingles, I had to learn from a few good sources valleys , etc on YouTube. One was veteran  roofing I think on YouTube and the other I thing the guy was named  red.. Anyway I felt I still had enough life  in me to do the roof. Little did I know doing dialysis 7 days a week , 12hours a night can have a large effect on your muscles. It was a challenge and I got pneumonia towards the end.

I haven’t been the same sines the roof got done. I’ve been limited to house work since it’s completion…

My roof costs me  $5k roofing, bids are around $18-$20k. Ask any neighbor and they will tell you they ain’t getting up there. Roofers aren’t gouging you, but roofers work together even though they are in competition to Get the  most money. Roofing starts out with a large crew to tear it off, followed by a smaller crew to reinstall it. Maybe three days at best,.

The closer to the ground the lower the cost for professionals as it becomes more competitive

My brother decided to give it a try

When I was 25 years younger, we built a house with a 12/12 roof.  It was summer, and I did it top down to avoid damage as well as allow 2x4s nailed horizontally for footing.

The shingles were 5" to the weather, so I snapped lines a multiple of 5' up from the edge.  The first course in each section was nailed at the top to allow the top course of the next section down to slide under and get nailed properly.  12 courses per section.

Lots of comments from sidewalk supers, but it worked well.

That was in the days of tar paper.  The peel/stick membrane of today would be a little more of a challenge.

Membrane is a plus, but causes expenses the next go around..

Decisions change when you hit the point where the roof is going to outlast you.

I drove past a new development yesterday where they are putting 4 story apartments or condos.  A couple guys were putting on roof sheeting and I'm sure next week they'll be shingling.  No thanks.

They want between $15k and $18k to do mine. For $5k I’ll do it myself.. Not saying there is a lot of profit in a roofers job, but and owner of the company, yes..
