The Square of Thales......everything old is new again

I have been creating sawdust off and on for better than 50 years.   Initially I mostly "white caned" my way through from books, magazines and the tv shows I could find. Without realizing it I got into a mode of challenging myself to learn something new every day.  Today was one of those days when I learned about the Square of Thales and this youtube guy Steve Maskery .  Some of you may know of this method but new to me .......

I have 2 of those I made some years ago after reading the tip somewhere in a magazine. One os considerably larger than the other and they are most useful when clamps are in the way across the corners.

Quite interesting.  New one one me.

I just saw this the past weekend.  At first I was skeptical that it would work, but then I saw him work thru the math and said, oh yeah.  Right now, i rarely make anything big enough that small square doesn't work

Never heard of it but wish I had known this years ago.

That is darn brilliant. Simple, never falls out of calibration, rock solid reliable. You could use those to square up other squares.

Well, as "The YouTube Guy" in question :), I can say that this is a very useful tool in many scenarios when a trad try square is not big enough (such as laying out the footprint of a new workshop).

I didn't invent the tool, but I did invent its name, the Square of Thales.

Thank you very much indeed for crediting me with the original video, most others don't.

Welcome all the way from France Steve!

I enjoy his math-based solutions. But then...
