My Bandsaw Blade anealed and now is stuck. How to remove it.

Featured Replies

I have been processing some logs at the capacity of the saw.  I am using a 1/2-2 AS (alternate set) blade that has been working well.

But that blade started to mis behave and I should have removed it but now that anealed blade is stuck in the wood.

Can I take my grinder and cut the blade above and below then remove the remainder by pulling it in reverse?

In the past I would sacrifice this cut and cut the blade free but this a great piece of wood to destroy for a destroyed blade (anealed).

are you SURE that the kerf didn't close behind the blade? Even a little bit?

This is rough milling so the piece is 2" thick and yes the blade does not apear to be pinched but someplace in it 11.5" of wood it must be.

I will use a 4 lbs hammer and a crow bar and try to open up the curf a little more.

Better yet let me drive in a hardwood wedge.

I beat on that wedge for 10 minutes and it only went in 1/2"  I think I am going to cut the blade with the grinder to get it off.  Any reason I should not?

Yes you can.  Maybe even tap ends with hammer.  Be careful we don't need any red leaks.

Grinder parted the blade in 5 seconds then cut it on the bottom then pulled it out with my very large pliers.

The BS blad was toast anyway so cutting it up also helps with the disposal.

I should be back in business later today after work.

While working with BS blade always do with leather gloves on.

just for future info. I use a screw driver to open the kerf first. As it opens use a cold steel chisel or other larger. Sometimes this breaks the outer side if the wood. Something else to try is to drive the blade back with a piece of wood just a little at the time. Just started doing it this way this week and it works pretty well. I does vibrate the saw and may not get movement on the first 2-3 tries, just keep at it.

I have never broken or cut a stuck blade and sometimes the wood is 5 to 7 inches thick.
