August 31, 20241 yr Popular Post Not sure how many pics are allowed, or considered acceptable here so if I add too many let me know. I've done a rough sketch for my first woodcarving project. I'm not expecting perfection, more like how close can I get to my target. I'm going to attempt to carve out a pipe tamper that is similar to one that I currently use. We will see. I have a week of vacation coming up next week and am looking forward to slicing wood and stropping some blades. Here are pics of the start and what I am basing the project on:

When you first light the pipe, you need to tamp it down. Then light it again, and tamp to get a nice ash layer going. Then as you smoke the pipe, you tamp it down if needed to keep the cherry going. It's also used to get any leftover tobacco out at the end. Of course, my wooden one wouldn't have this feature, but the metal one in the picture actually unscrews and there is a skinny rod inside to loosen up the tobacco if it's packed too tight.

Sucks when I forget one. Really irritates me because I've bought so many to make sure I have one everywhere I am and still forget. I actually bought a big bag of golf tees to use as tampers. Throw a handful in the car, here, there, and they are so cheap who cares what happens to them.
