Just a dear little spoon

So I started on this spoon by gluing a pattern on some maple and by 5:30 I have it this far along.

The hardest part has past for I had no idea what it would look like at this stage.

Won't get to work on it tomorrow for I have 16 stands to hold 2 different sets of20240826_170917.jpg.59b82f26ef2363d83bec0f13bcd5a842.jpg20240826_170925.jpg.f34acaeeecc3216a064d834ea25a96b8.jpg20240826_151735.jpg.9b58eaecf1284727dbd7ae54421b9743.jpg nativity characters to build and finish..

Another wild set for one of them as she wants the color of the bases to match most of the glass color of each display!!

And as we were leaving Hobby Lobby yesterday there by the cash register a 20 piece set of 2 oz. bottles of acrylic paint

and for the price of 9.95 it hopped in my cart.50 cents a bottle as we have been paying 1.99 to 4.99 per bottle depending

on the brand name???? We now have maybe 10 different brands and can't tell too much difference in their quality... Maybe the more expensive has extra color added???

Gorgeous!

I really like the open spiral turning beside it, too!  Turned a similar, shorter one years ago on my first lathe- WAY TOO MUCH sanding!!

Wow, I really dig that spoon. Great job.

When you applied the Tung Oil, how long did you wait before turning it over to apply to the other side?

I love the spoon! You are so creative!

Vague Scorpio as small as it is just a little on a soft cloth and if that don't get it all over front and back do a little more as the first coat only take four or five minutes to apply..

For this maple spoon leaving it on for ten minutes or so then rub off with another soft cloth. The wood is so tight waiting a day before rubbing it off won't put any more in to the wood but will make it harder to rub off the excess.. I will coat it one more time in a couple of weeks but in this Texas heat right now two of three hours is long enough before rubbing it off. This is 100% tung oil and not those cans of tung oil finish that has no tung oil at all as they say it in a  tricky way to make you believe it does have some but don't.

This board started with 100% tung oil with no stain or dye and in two weeks I will add one more coat. The wood is Ash so it really brought out the beauty of this wood.

The board with the 4 pieces the bottom left has just one coat of 100% tung oil then waited two week and top coated it with Rustoelum 2X clear semi-gloss or gloss , can't remember. The board next to it on the bottom is just the ash wood with nothing on it.

The two boards on top has a discontinued brand of stain that I really like for it stains the wood just a little so it leaves al the beauty of the grain and I don't have to worry about splotching.

One other board of the same ash had Minwax as the stain them one spraying of the 2X and it turned out darker and ulgy so I threw it away before the customer came to check out which one he wanted . To me Minwax makes wood look ugly but hey, thats me . This is what's waiting for him as he had a big fire and all that was left was the legs which are cast iron and of his 83, I think is the number,  antique clocks and none made it through the fire.. His museum was a total loss

I can run my hands all over the finished spoon and it is very smooth to the touch in just one day since the oil was used.

The table top was stained with my favorite stain where the spoon has no stain.
