Decided I would use American plywood for I wanted to see how the different plys will look making a butterfly.

 I have this picture scroll sawed in to 56 pieces. 

After I used the drum sander to take the bows out of the Ash I then run the edges across the joiner then glued them together. No glue line showing so I will cover all the wood with Scotch brand shipping tape then take the wood in to the next room and shoot a good coat of temporary glue then got wife to help me lay the pattern on to the glue. The reason I do it this way is because long ago I had a 20x30" pattern and shot the glue on to the back of the pattern then as I was trying to lay it on the wood, the pattern got turned wrong and folded back against each other and that was the end of that pattern...A lesson learned to hard way.

  Look at the pattern and even though it is a pattern made by a machine it was the person in charge who made a few mistakes so as I started sawing I caught one or two. 

   After I cut out all the pieces I started pulling off the pieces of the pattern. and with using the Scotch brand shipping tape the wood is completely ready for the carving to begin as the next step, meaning I don't have to use any kind of thinner to loosen the glue and try to get it up off the wood so I can continue. Hoping to have the thing finished tomorrow with a picture to show!!

I like butterflies Jess & I'll bet this will be super when you are done with it!

The other day I seen a black swallowtail in the lantana but it looked just a bit different.  Turns out it was a male black swallowtail and I am most used to seeing females   It was a real beauty.

Funny for I was just yesterday looking at all the species of butterfly's and just saw the black swallowtails. We don't have them here plus a lot of the really pretty ones!!

I just now looked at the outside temp and it said 108.5 so I charged out to my shop and brought this butterfly inside for I was afraid he might catch fire

Did someone say unique?  That is stained glass in wood

The butterfly with all the blue is IMO a female black swallowtail while the black & yellow is a male (again IMO).  I thought the male was a Joan's Swallowtail from the description I found, but if it was it was way out of it's normal range of Missouri & Arkansas.

 

Very cool Patch. Lot of pieces to remember where they go as least for me.

No Dave,I do not like to use American plywood. Too many voids and the top ply is so thin and brittle I have to spend too much times correcting all the bad stuff..Once I started using Baltic Birch plywood  I don't want to use anything else.. 

 A 30 minute drive home from Home Depot with  4x8 sheet of American plywood laying flat in the sun ain't flat anymore and can't be made to be flat ever again...My drive home might be hotter than most guys have to do and I under stand that but I can't ever tell what I will need when its 20 degrees outside. 

  I just wanted to see how this water base paint I use for most of my projects would look and if so should I use it again,NO. for the Baltic Birch gives me about the same looks with the different plys and besides the baltic birch has more plys should a person tapers the wood so all the ply's can be seen makes my projects look better, I think.

 

Cal I showed wife your picture and she said oh yes we do have those butterfly's and she showed me one not long after we started eating one showed up and she even knew the names of them.

     Back when we were trying to make a living birds and bees were every where but that's all I knew, now we want to know everything about things like that as they are enjoyable to watch,  We have two of the best bird feeders one can get anywhere but they are actually what animal crackers comes in at Sam's Club And they hang there all the time. The only bird seed we use in them are black sun flower seeds... We keep the extra in the fridge to stay fresh.  We started out using the tall clear plastic tubes with holes in a few different heights and the sparrows and other kind of birds we did not care about would empty the seed out of those tubes to the ground looking for their favorite seed. More or less wasting money.

The only birds that will go in to the clear plastic container which is about a 2 gallon size container hangs under the deck cover so rain water doesn't hurt are redbirds- cardinals, tit mouse and wrens. They hang out between two ropes about eye level keeping the Squirrels and Racoons from getting in. Sometimes a dove will go in there but they are too dumb to get out so we have to go out and tilt the container over so they can see the opening or else they might flop up and down trying to find a way out forever??. The tit mouse gets a sun flower see in his mouth and takes it out to a small branch and while holding it with his  foot, pecks it open for the seed then goes back inside for more. This last all day for we have lots of those birds around here. And we have humming bird feeders.
