August 16, 20242 yr Popular Post comment_340612 Like the Title says...The Boss wanted to go out & about this morning..and check out any garage sales going on... First place was a gas station, to put $30 in the tank..and a cold Coke for the Boss...and that was the main expense for the morning.. 1st stop..was a "Moving Sale"....looked around for a bit...was just walking back to the car, when the Lady that was running the sale caught up to me..and handed me a few "Rusty Tools", as I had told her, "Since I am an old Rusty Tool....One item in the free handful... Was a big pair of Tin Snips...(might need a little work) and the other 4 FREE items... Was a "Wonder Bar" ...A Dunlap Marking gauge, a meat hammer, and that Craftsman 5N Bevel gauge..and I had to stand there, and tell her what each tool was used for... Next stop...I bought a Disston/ HK Porter Coping saw.. For a Buck-fifty....was back in the car and ready to leave..when the Boss noticed the Mini-Corn Hole sets...that she wanted for the Great Grandson...so, for $10..she got a Green Bay Packers set, with 4 green bean bags and 4 YELLOW ones... A couple more sales to raid...finally.. For $3..a Stanley No. 945-10in brace and a countersink bit... So...that was the entire Friday Morning...3 sales out of 7 we looked at... Not too bad of a day? August 18, 20242 yr Author Popular Post comment_340691 Lets see...Coping saw, was a Disston/HK Porter No. 15B....reaches about an inch deeper than your "normal" coping saws... Trying to remove the rest of the rustiness...nickel plating is a bit flaky....old blade snapped when I went to change it out, now has a brand new blade One on the right, is just your normal run of the mill countersink bit for a Brace....one on the left? Is the new one in the shop...has been cleaned up and sharpened... These 2...both were sold at Sears, back in their day...Bevel Gauge is marked as a Craftsman 5N ( BN ?) and the Marking wheel gauge is a Dunlap...which needed a new locking bolt, washer, and a threaded insert..and the cutter cleaned and sharpened.. A 6" ruler is still very readable on it, as well... Tin Snips, and the Mini Wrecking bar have been stowed away in the tool chest drawer. Meat Hammer...was sent to the Kitchen sink...and then maybe a drawer.. Which leaves.. That Stanley No. 945-10in Brace drill......chuck has been freed up, ratcheting works again....selector moves easy, again...ball bearing head has been oil, all the rust is gone.. Installed a #12 (3/4") bit and did 6 test drives.....since I needed 6 holes, ~3/8" deep... Building a Towel Rack for inside the Bathroom Project's box... Might have earned my "Bandit" nickname? August 19, 20242 yr Author Popular Post comment_340697 Roh kay, Raggie....I did check into the stash of Brace drills hanging up in the Tool Cabinet...and ..I do have a Stanley No. 945 Brace...except..it is an 8" sweep version...also thinking that the 14" sweep Stanley might also be an 945? As for that coping saw....this photo shows a "Normal, run of the mill" Coping saw (Great Neck Tool Co.) Real wood handle, BTW...but, when I lay the "new" coping saw on top of this one... The Disston/HK Porter saw has a bit longer reach.... Will be saving up for Labor Day Weekend....as West Liberty, Ohio has their annual Tractor Fest out at Lions Park...hopefully, my old legs will be up to the 2 mile walks... Report

August 24, 20241 yr Popular Post comment_341022 I may have to be the kill joy here..... does anyone have any luck with those kind of tin snips? I've used a lot of Wiss and similar shears, but traditional snips are something I just never got the hang of.... Nice marking gauge! Pretty cool that the ruler is still visible. Report
August 24, 20241 yr Author Popular Post comment_341043 Used to use them all the time...just had to watch where the cut metal was going...these MIGHT need a bit of a sharpening, eh? day #2....Boss gets a matching pair of Table Lamps to place on her "NEW" Sofa Table.... We pulled into one sale...had a 1/4 mile driveway....and you could see the piles of tools from the road... i restrained meself, though...and only spend $10...on 4 items.. One Millers falls No. 2500A, and a Craftsman enclosed gear drill...the miterbox/saw? Methinks the box is a bit YOUNGER than that saw.. As that saw is about 130 yrs old... have already rehabbed the Millers falls drill.. Runs smooth and very quiet now.....That saw.. seems to be right after Disston went to the "Modern" saw bolts... So, this one is from the 1890s? been a LONG day...about time for a Tonic & Gin? Report
