Mission style chest-of-drawers #2

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

It was in May 2024 when I completed the chest of drawers #1.  I have not posted since then, but I have the second one in-work.  It is not the same style but is similar.

Just a few pics.

The dovetails were made using my table saw.  I have the tails (qty 100) done and have not started the pins.  I choose to apply the finish before assembly.  I only have the drawer fronts milled in rough dimn.   I spray outside or in the garage and then carry every piece in to my clean rooms (kitchen, living rm, or use the ping pong table in the basement).  Thanks for looking.   Danl

Yikes!  But then I pay about that much for walnut when I need it.

You buying at Alpine?

I wanted QSWO 9" wide.  It is not easy to find and when you do, you have to pay a premium price.  This board will make two drawer fronts. Not sure what I will do with the other $40.    Danl

Yeah, if you're making something special it's worth having the right wood for the job.  You won't regret it, but you do regret looking at mediocre wood the rest of your life when you skimp.  Done that a few times.  I also have a couple pieces that have been waiting years for the right job.  My ex was a bit less particular about saving some curly cherry for just the right project, so that one has "Save me, I'm special" written on it :D

For your drawers do you purchase your poplar 2s, 4s or rough?

yup, downtown SF.  pretty good selection, nice folks.  it's for a smaller box, 6-7" on the longest dimension, so it'll be fine.  first board off the pile will suffice.

it takes the same amount of work to use crummy wood as it takes to use good wood, so use good wood.

I like Alpine, as you say, nice folks, good selection and quality lumber.  I prefer rough sawn stock, and finding that can be hit or miss with the bigger suppliers in ABQ (Rugby is good though, used to be Lumber Products).

These days if I'm going to drive that far I just go up to Santa Fe for the sure thing.  If I'm in ABQ anyway I'll go by Albuquerque Exotic Wood, they tend to be pretty good.  Couple years ago they had a bunch of Cocobolo, they said it had been sitting in a container in Long Beach for 20+ years after the importer that owned it went out of business.  Talk about buried treasure!

Didn't mean to hijack the thread, just kinda happened! :D

it's cool, we'll type real small so we don't take up too much space.

there was a place in ABQ long ago that had nice stuff, but they shut down, ABQ Hardwoods?  i think BMC supply has hardwoods there, but Alpine is 15 min from my house, so that works very well.  i don't carry a lot of stock, only buy what i need when i need it, and still the pile keeps getting bigger...sigh....

either way, way better selection and pricing than homey depot.  yikes.

A  friend owns/runs a small cabinet shop and sold me ~100 bd ft of S2S poplar milled to 5/8" thick.  When that lot ran out, I purchased a small amount of S3S milled to 13/16".  Mostly S3S is avil in my area.  For the drawer bottoms I ripped 13/16" thick matl, glued, and ran the bottoms through a 20" planer.  Milled to ~ 1/4".  Danl
