August 9, 20241 yr Popular Post Granddaughter was interested in getting a heart-shaped bowl, so I dragged out some old pieces of wood and got busy. Not as good as I'd like, but tough to carve that deep! The wood was a bowl blank I "inherited" when my dad was no longer able to work on his lathe. I believe it came from the furniture factory where he worked in the wood shop, as did a half-dozen other blanks in my possession. Most of them are walnut or some other showy wood, but this one has me stumped. It looks like wormy chestnut, but the grain is very close. Any ideas?
August 9, 20241 yr Popular Post None at all, but I do find that grain quite striking, like the color s well.
August 9, 20241 yr Popular Post Wormy Chestnut has worm holes in it. This looks like it was saved because of the spalting. I was thinking Ambrosia Maple but it usually has actual holes in it too.
August 9, 20241 yr Author It does have several small worm (insect?) holes, but only one shows on the bottom. The dark streak in the upper left lobe hides it. (Upper picture) On this side there are four holes, all within dark streaks.

August 10, 20241 yr Popular Post I'm clueless on species but really nice job on the bowl John. Don't forget to sign and date it.

August 15, 20241 yr I'm gonna guess maple. Grain too tight to be pecan or hickory. A crotch section or somesuch likely rejected from normal use which is why it was saved for a potential lathe project.
